Mahmudur Rahman Khan
The book ‘Tumi Chara Shunno Ami’ (I Am Lonely without You) is written by the contemporary researcher, poet, writer and columnist Parvez Babul. He is also known as a mass media person and associated with many domestic and international organisations. This is his first poetry book which is published in 2018 by Balaka Prokashon. His earlier published books are ‘Women’s Empowerment, Food Security and Climate Change’ (2010), ‘Violence against Women and Human Rights’ (2011), ‘Language Movement, Climate Change, Media and Women Issues’ (2012), ‘How to End Violence against Women: Ensure Eco-Friendly Planet’ (2014) etc. Though he is very popular as an essayist, I will discuss about his poetic skill in this book. There are 55 poems in this book. All of these poems will fascinate the readers with attractions.
The starting poem named ‘Tumi Chara Shunno Ami’ (I Am Lonely without You) is the name poem of the book. We see poet’s depression in this poem. He is sleepless and insane for someone. He writes, ‘I am yet alone thinking and thinking of you.’ The next poem of the book is named ‘Ma’ (Mother) where he tells about mother. He wrote there ‘The man who lost his mother has none and nothing else.’ He used the word ‘faith’ in his many poems. He thinks that faith is the most important element of love. He writes in his poem ‘Bhalobasar Manush, Priyotomo Manush’, ‘Where there is no faith, there is no love.’ He also said, ‘If he gets loved he will be the servant of faith and love.’
May be sadness is the best companion of the poet. That’s why he seeks happiness in his poem ‘Ektu Sukh Chai’ (I want a Little Happiness). In his poem named ‘Tomar Proti,’ (To you), he expresses that he always wanted to be the dearest person of his beloved. He wants democracy in love so that one can get his/her beloved and lover in their life. So he demands it in his poem named ‘Bhalobasay Gonotontro Thaka Uchit’ (Democracy is needed in Love). He is a pure feminist who is clamorous against the oppression of women. In his poem ‘Biborno Lal Benaroshi’ (Pale Red Benaroshi, one kind of saree), he said, ‘Women life, like thermal sand of the desert.’ In his another poem named ‘Narir Jibon Bisoyok Alapcharita’ (Colloquy about Woman’s Life), he showed that a girl is repressed by the society for dowry. He also wrote a poem named ‘International Women’s Day.’ The poet is also a social activist to defend the torture and torment against the women.
The poet wrote about many famous figures and national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam is one of them. He wrote a poem about Nazrul by expressing the qualities of this great poet. There is a poem about Khalid Mahmud Mithu who was a famous painter and killed by an accident. He also wrote about May Day dedicating the poem to Shirin Akhter MP. The poet wrote about freedom war and he is proud of it. He loves freedom. That’s why he wants to fly like a cage free bird by singing the tunes of its own. He hates class discriminations. He wrote a poem named ‘Aamar Kono Jaat Paat Nei’ (I do not Belong to Any Class) where he shows that he is human. As a human, he doesn’t believe in class discrimination.
The poet always stands with human rights. He wrote a poem named ‘Europe, America, Simanto Khule Dao’ (Europe, America, Open Your Border). There he wrote about the ruthless death of the Syrian three years old boy Alan Kurdi. He always fights against the human made disasters. He wrote a poem named ‘Prithibir Okritoggo Manushera’ (Ungrateful Peoples of the World) where he wrote to save the world from the bad effects of climate changing and the disasters. So, nature becomes the most powerful element of his poems.
Poet Parvez Babul dealt with many useful topics in this book. His thinking and the selection of topic is universal. Using of his rhetorical devices and his arts of the rhetorical devices fascinated me. He used many conceits, imageries, similes and metaphors to light up the blossoms of his poems. The simplicity and the selection of his tasteful and delicate words increased my interested to read the book more and more. I hope that readers will also get different taste and they will be satisfied to read the book.
