Bangladesh’s leading left-arm spinner Taijul Islam said on Monday that his bowling philosophy of containing the batsman is earning him dividend in the Test format.
Taijul, who is regarded as a Test specialist, doesn’t want to compromise with it, and considers it to be his major area of strength.
Taijul picked six wicket in the second inning against West Indies as the visitors folded for 139 in chase of a 204-run target to continue his superb run of form this year as it was his fourth five-wicket haul in the last three Tests.
Taijul grabbed 40 wickets from just six games, putting him fourth in the list of wicket-takers in Tests this year, six wickets behind South Africa pacer Kagiso Rabada, who leads the table with 46 scalps from nine matches.
Taijul, who picked up maiden five-wicket haul on his Test debut against the same opposition four years ago, has successfully established himself as one of the most important members of the Bangladesh Test side.
“Whether it’s a four-man spin attack or two-man spin attack, I always concentrate on bowling to contain runs,” Taijul told reporters at Dhaka on Monday.
“I think we need to develop [game sense] it. But you need give time. You will see lot of bowlers doing well after three four years in Test,” Taijul Islam said.
“I just wanted to contain the batsman. Even if you don’t pick wickets, if you are checking the runs it will help the bowlers from the other end to pick wickets. Cricket is such a game that someone will pick wickets while someone else will stop the flow of runs. I just wanted to follow my process. Getting wickets is something that has got lot to do with fate,” he said.
“I am not thinking anything about it[fastest to 100 Test wickets for Bangladesh]. If there is wicket in my fate, I will get, otherwise not so.
I only need to concentrate on bowling in the right area as it gives you a better chance of picking wickets,” he added.
“Playing cricket itself is a competition and I will play only if I perform and will be dropped if I am not performing.
There are times when you might not be picked due to match situation and you must accept it.
All you need to do is perform,” Taijul said.
“At that point [when there is no Test cricket around] if there is domestic competition, I play there or else do my individual training session.
I think one must have the challenge within himself because if I don’t do my practice regularly with the right kind of devotion [when there is nothing for me to do] eventually I will end up lagging behind. I always try to keep myself updated to be among the front runner,” he added.
“I enjoy batting when I am contributing. Apart from batting every now and then, there is nothing more I do,” said Taijul.
“You need to have confidence to score runs perhaps these innings
will help me to gain confidence for the upcoming matches,” he concluded.
