The Department of English of Notre Dame University Bangladesh (NDUB) organised a seminar on public speaking titled ‘The Art of Public Speaking’ at NDUB campus on July 7, 2018 at 3:00pm.The seminar had Dr Syed Manzoorul Islam, Professor and Former Chair Department of English, University of Dhaka as the speaker.
Present at the seminar were Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Fr Patrick Daniel Gaffney, CSC, Registrar Fr Adam S Pereira, CSC. Also present at the seminar were faculty members of the Department of English — Dilip Kumar Sarkar, Asst Professor; Nafisa Sultana, Lecturer; Sheikh Rezwan Shihab, Senior Lecturer; Md Waliullah, Lecturer; Ahmed Tahsin Shams, Lecturer; Theodore Sourav Palma, Lecturer; Nazia Forhin Shifat, Lecturer and Professor Dr Syed Naquib Muslim.
The welcoming speech of the programme was given by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Fr Patrick Daniel Gaffney, CSC, where he welcomed all the students, faculty members and members of the administrative body along with the honoured speaker.
Following this was the introductory note by Registrar Fr Adam S Pereira, CSC, where he mentioned the importance of learning and knowing the way of public speaking and how it is actually an art. Later on, a short biographical speech on Professor Dr Syed Manzoorul Islam’s academic achievements and his works was presented by Theodore Sourav Palma, Lecturer.
During the speech of Professor Dr Syed Manzoorul Islam, he mentioned the basic concepts of becoming a good public speaker. He said, “The first rule of speaking whether publicly or anywhere else is to have a message that needs to be conveyed to the audience”. He also emphasised on the art of time management and also to understand the audience.
In the end, a vote of thanks was given by Dilip Kumar Sarkar, Asst Professor, thanking all those who had contriduted behind the successful organising of the event along with students who participated and voluntarily acted on behalf of the Department of English.
