‘Shrek’ is getting a reboot. Its spinoff, Puss in Boots, will also get the same treatment. Chris Meledandri, the man behind ‘Despicable Me’ films, is helming the reboots. The original ‘Shrek’ series had four films and were based on a misunderstood and ostracised ogre who gets inundated by fairy tale creatures and goes on a quest to get back the quiet he had in his swamp.
The subsequent films added more and more characters. The first two films were adored by critics and were financially successful, while the last two films were poorly received. The film’s voice cast — especially Mike Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey) and Cameron Diaz (Fiona) — was often singled out for praise.
Chris Meledandri would like to retain the voice cast for the reboot. He told Variety, “When you look back on those vocal performances they’re awesome, and while you certainly could make a case for a complete reinvention, I find myself responding to my own nostalgic feelings of wanting to go back to those characterizations. The challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels.”
Meledandri also explained how he is approaching the reboot. “There’s a tremendous amount of fun to be had in that world, but it’s a high bar to find a story that’s truly world. You want to find something in the narrative that really feels like a departure,” he said.
