BP Report
Awami League chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has pulled out of the race for the Rangpur-6 parliamentary constituency and nominated Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury as the final candidate of ruling Awami League for the seat.
After leaving the seat in Rangpur’s Pirganj, her in-laws’ home, now Bangabandhu’s daughter Hasina has only Gopalganj-3, consisted of her ancestral home Tungipara and Kotalipara, to fight for in the upcoming election.
Earlier on Thursday, while addressing Pirganj Awami League leaders at Ganabhaban on PM Sheikh Hasina said Chaudhury was “like a daughter to her” and instructed activists to campaign for her.
The Awami League chief had filed nominations to contest from Gopalganj-3 and Rangpur-6. The speaker also submitted nominations for the Rangpur seat in line with the party’s instructions.
According to people familiar with the matter, Hasina called in local leaders on Thursday ahead of the December 9 deadline to withdraw the nominations.
Sheikh Hasina was elected MP from both seats in the 2014 polls. She later left the Rangpur constituency and Shirin Sharmin won in the by-election.
The BNP has initially nominated two candidates for the Rangpur seat.
