Students of applied physics and electronic engineering department of Rajshahi University went on a hunger strike demanding merging their department with electrical and electronic engineering department on Monday.
Over one hundred students of the department started the strike in front of the university’s first science building on Monday morning, three days after the engineering faculty denied realising their demand at its faculty meeting on November 29.
According to the protesting students, the EEE department launched amid protest by the APEE department students in 2015. At present, the EEE department has only two teachers and only one class rooms. The department’s students alleged that, as the other public universities of the country including Dhaka University have converted the name of their APEE department to EEE department, there is hardly any job facility for the APEE students in the country.
They would continue their fast to death adding that if their demand is not met immediately.
Following the issue, an academic council meeting is scheduled to be held tomorrow (Wednesday).
Professor Md Ekramul Hamid, RU engineering faculty dean in this regard told The Bangladesh Post that they sat with the both department teachers on November 29 but could not reach to a concrete decision as EEE teachers reject the proposal.
On the other hand, Professor Abu Zafor Muhammad Touhidul, EEE department chairman told The Bangladesh Post that it was not possible to combine the two different departments into one. ‘When the university authorities ask us, we will tell the authorities why it is not possible,’ he added.
Professor M Abdus Sobhan, RU vice chancellor told Bangladesh Post that they would discuss about the issue in the academic council meeting scheduled to be hold tomorrow.
