Words are going around that different kinds of moves are being undertaken to stigmatize and disrupt the forthcoming elections in December. Elements from some of the alliances are working surreptitiously to make holding of polls difficult for Election Commission. Already illegal money and arms and ammunitions are coming into the country to jeopardise holding of elections and afterwards, especially if the opposition political parties fail to win.
Against their constant demand for level playing field, Chief Election Commissioner has ensured this and accordingly said that level playing field is already there for all parties. This would ensure a free, fair and participatory election in December.
Grand Alliance has almost completed work relating to seat sharing for all 300 seats with alliance partners. Strong guess is other partners will get 70 seats while AL will contest in rest 230 seats. On the other hand, it is expected that BNP will sacrifice 50 to 60 seats for its allies.
After a lot of tussle between the two factions in the local Awami League, current Member of Parliament from Rupganj Golam Gazi Dastgir has received green signal from the party (AL) and is likely to contest in the same seat. There was speculation that Hussain Mohammad Ershad would get nomination to contest in this seat but now it seems there is no hope for him. Jatiya Party tried to take advantage of the internal feud in local AL and declared the name of Ershad as the possible candidate from that area.
Major General (retd) AMSA Ameen, has joined Gonoforum and bought nomoination paper to contest the upcoming elections. He was Awami League candidate in 2001 election from Kurigram – 2 seat. It is being discussed that he was expecting nomination from AL, but after waiting for the last minute, he joined Gono Forum.
Election Commission has taken the decision to use EVM during voting in six constituencies after an extended meeting.
