18 years after the ‘Gladiator’, Ridley Scott is all set to helm the second film in the franchise, ‘Gladiator 2’. As per the report, Paramount will be developing the project and Universal has the option to co-produce the film. Peter Craig, known for ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay’ – Part 1 and 2, has been roped in to write the film.
Released in 2000, ‘Gladiator’ fetched 11 Oscar nominations and won the Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Costume Design, Best Sound and Best Visual Effects awards. Russell Crowe played the role of Maximus and the film saw his character’s demise. The sequel is said to be the story of Lucius, the son of Lucilla played by Connie Nielsen. He is the nephew of Commodus who was played by Joaquin Phoenix. Phoenix’s character too died in the first film.
As per the report, Ridley Scott’s Scott Free banner is leading the charge. Scott is reportedly also helming the film adaptation of ‘The Merlin Saga’ for Disney. He is also directing a TV series ‘Raised By Wolves’ for TNT. He is also involved in the Scarlett Johansson film about journalist Lyndsey Addario.
