People of Rajshahi Sunday unanimously demanded Rajshahi-Dhaka-Chattogram direct railway link for smooth movement of people and transportation of goods.
They said direct rail communication on the route can be the vital means of flourishing industries in the country’s northwest region together with improving its socio-economic condition.
The issue has become the demand of time, they added.
They came up with the demand while addressing a human-chain at Shaheb Bazar Zero Point in the city. Rajshahi Raksha Sangram Parishad (RRSP) organised the programme to press home the demand.
Chaired by RRSP President and Editor of Daily Sonali Sangbad Liakat Ali, the meeting was addressed, among others, by its General Secretary Jamaat Khan, Organising Secretary Debashish Pramanik Debu, Language Veteran Mosharraf Hossain Akunji, valiant Freedom Fighter Dr Abdul Matin, senior journalist Mustafizur Rahman Khan, Advocates Entajul Haque and Ankur Sen and women leader Kolpona Roy. The speakers unequivocally called upon the government to flourish the industrial sector in Rajshahi aimed at infusing dynamism into its economic activities.
Stressing the need for bringing all other existing potential sectors under budgetary allocation for its overall development they urged the government to provide 10 percent incentives to the entrepreneurs who are interested to set up industries in Rajshahi.
Referring to enormous prospects of setting up of agro-based industries here the discussants said need-based steps should be taken in this regard as early as possible. Building economic zone has become the demand of time.
They mentioned that if Rajshahi Airport was upgraded to international standard various agro-products could be exported to various foreign countries including the Middle East nations from there directly. They added that two major tourism-enriched cities- Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar are detached from Rajshahi in terms of direct rail and air communications.
