Zone-based lockdown likely within 48 hours

Two DCC mayors ready for the task

The two city corporations of capital Dhaka are likely to enforce a zone-based lockdown in 45 areas across the city within 48 hours following their receiving of specific information and map from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) on Tuesday arranged a coordination meeting at the Nagar Bhaban in the capital regarding the implementation of the proposed lockdown. DSCC Mayor Barrister Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh presided over the meeting.

Taposh Said, “As we do not have any effective medicine to prevent the deadly coronavirus, according to world health organization social distance is the only solution now. To contain the spread of the virus, several guidelines have been given from different organizations including the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). According to guideline, we will mark red zones under DSCC within a day or two.”

We have to provide food for poor people who will stay in red zones. At the same time, we have to manage treatment facilities for those infected with the virus and who are not.

“I urge all the citizens to cooperate with us so that we can prevent the spread of virus,” he added.
In another virtual announcement, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Isalm told the media, “Some 17 areas under DNCC are being marked as red zones. It has been proposed a complete lockdown in these zones from the health department. I have talked to the DGHS in this regard and asked them to mention specific areas of these red zones. For example, Mohammadpur are in red zone, then which areas of Mohammadpur will come under complete lockdown.”

“DGHS has told us they hey will give a list mentioning the specific areas within a day or two. After getting the specific information and mapping of red zones, a complete lockdown will come into force,” he continued.

The Mayor also said, “Our councilors are ready to coordinate with other organizations to implement the lockdown.”
According to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), some 17 red zones areas of Dhaka North are Gulshan, Badda, Cantonment, Mohakhali, Tejgaon, Rampura, Aftabnagar, Mohammadpur, Kallayanpur, Mogbazar, Airport, Banasree, Rajabazar, Uttara and Mirpur.

In Dhaka south, 28 red zone areas are Jatrabari, Demra, Mugda, Gendaria, Dhanmondi, Jigatola, Lalbagh, Azimpur, Basabo, Shantinagar, Paltan, Kolabagan, Ramna, Sutrapur, Malibag, Kotowali, Tikatuli, Mitford, Shahjahanpur, Motijheel, Wari, Khilgaon, Paribagh, Kadamtali, Siddheswari, Laksmi Bazar, Elephant Road and Segunbagicha.

Earlier on June 9, the government formulated a guideline titled “Bangladesh Risk Zone Based COVID-19 Contaminate Implementation Strategy” considering that the virus would spread exceedingly across the country.

As per the guideline, an area in Dhaka city with at least 60 confirmed cases of coronavirus will be marked as a red zone where a lockdown will be enforced.

On the other hand, an area outside the capital with more than 10 Covid-19 cases will be considered as a red zone and a lockdown will be imposed.

According the sources, at least 45 areas in Dhaka were found to have over 60 Covid-19 patients.
Earlier on June 9, lockdowns were imposed in capital’s Rajabazar and several areas in Chattogram, Narayanganj, Narsinghdi and Gazipur districts to stem the spread of the Covid-19.
