A writ petition has been filed in the High Court (HC) seeking judicial probe into the incident of forcing Narail college teacher Swapan Kumar Biswas to wear garland of shoes.

Advocate Purnima Jahan, on behalf of Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK), filed the writ petition with the High Court on Thursday (June 30).

The HC bench of Justice Md Mujibur Rahman Miah and Justice Khizir Hayat may hold a hearing on the petition next week, said Purnima Jahan.

Earlier on June 28, the lawyer drew the attention of the court to the humiliation of the college teacher who was garlanded with shoes on June 17. The HC bench then advised her to file a writ petition.

A mob, comprising students of Mirzapur United College in Narail, had forced Swapan Kumar Biswas to wear a garland of shoes around his neck for what Muslim locals and students said was his attempt to protect a student of Hindu community from the same mob.

The incident came to light after a video of the incident went viral on social media. The video of the incident, which showed the locals and students putting a garland of shoes around acting vice principal of the college Swapan Kumar Biswas’s neck after accusing him of belittling Islam.

The teacher was assaulted in presence of the police after the incident had occurred on the college campus.

The incident took place in the wake of a post on Facebook by a Hindu student who had shared a photo of Indian BJP leader Nupur Sharma, who has been criticised for her remarks on Prophet Muhammad.

There was day-long unrest in the college over the post and rumours that Swapan Kumar Biswas had sided with the student, following which police escorted him out of the campus but not before he was garlanded with shoes.

According to locals, some Muslim students asked the Hindu student to delete the post after he had gone to the college. Police have arrested the Hindu student under the Digital Security Act.
