A court has sentenced brother-in-law and sister-in-law to life imprisonment for killing a young man named Roni Islam in Kushtia. Kushtia District and Sessions Judge Arup Kumar Goswami handed down the verdict at 11:30 am on Monday.
The convicts are Sajib Hossain, 25, son of Alamgir Hossain of Haider village in Haider of Chilmari union of Daulatpur upazila and Seema Khatun, 38, wife of Afaz Uddin of Tajpur village in Hogalbaria union.
Each of the convicts was sentenced to one more year of rigorous imprisonment for non-payment of a fine of Tk 20,000. According to court sources, Roni Islam, son of Naharul Islam of Tajpur village, left the house on the evening of January 24, 2018 saying that he was going to Sonaikundi market. Then he did not return home.
Then on the afternoon of February 1, 2018, Daulatpur police recovered his body lying in the sand at Udayanagar Char in Chilmari Union.
Roni Islam had an extramarital affair with Seema Khatun, the wife of Afaz Uddin, an expatriate from the same village. When the matter of extramarital affair came to light, Seema Khatun called Roni Islam to Udayanagar Char and killed him with the help of his brother-in-law Sajib Hossain and put his body in the sand of Char.
When the charges in the murder case were framed on January 15, 2019, the allegations against the accused were proved beyond a reasonable doubt after the testimony of 15 witnesses. State PP Advocate Anup Kumar Nandi said the charges against the accused in the Rony Islam murder case were proved beyond doubt and the court sentenced Sajib Hossain and Seema Khatun to life imprisonment and one more year of rigorous imprisonment without paying a fine of Tk 20,000 each.
