White Cane Safety Day observed in Khulna

The World White Cane Safety Day-2019 was observed in Khulna for ensuring legitimate rights to the visually impaired people for their welfare on Tuesday.

Marking the day, Department of Social Services (DSS) and District Administration jointly brought out a rally from Shaheed Hadis Park with the participation of large number of people including members of various volunteer organizations who are working for improving living and livelihood condition of the blind people.

After parading some of the city streets, the rally was ended at Circuit House where a discussion meeting was held on the issue.

Director of Divisional Department of Social Service (DSS) Md. Abdur Rahman attended the meeting as chief guest with Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Ziaur Rahman in the chair.

In the 1960, the National Federation of the Blind became a leader in fighting for the rights of the blind and in pioneering innovative training programmes using the white cane. At the time, the United States Congress adopted a joint resolution in 1964 designating October 15 of each year as White Cane Safety Day and recognizing that white canes enable blind people to travel safely and independently.

The meeting was told that the World White Cane Safety Day on 15th October annually celebrates the achievements of people who are blind or visually impaired. The day marks the importance of recognizing the white cane.

The discussants said White Cane Awareness Day is our way of emphasizing the critical role that this tool plays in living the lives we want and informing the public about its true significance.

There called for creating better scopes for education and vocational training to create more employment opportunities for the challenged people. After the meeting chief guest distributed white cane among 20 blind disabled people. Deputy Director of Department of Social Service in Khulna Md Motahar Hossain, Regional Info Officer of PID M. Javed Iqval, Director of Medical College and Hospital in Khulna Dr. ATM Monjur Morshed, among others, addressed it.
