When carelessness becomes culture!

People of Dhaka have become robotic to keep pace with the busy city life. But, they often forget about the safety and security of their lives.

As per updated data of Bangladesh Railway, 263 people have died in accidents at railway crossings between 2008 and 2018.

Jaywalking, illegal establishments on and around the railway tracks in the city, violating signals and less monitoring at the level crossings are the most common reasons behind train accidents in the city as well as other parts of the country.

People are reluctant to follow rules. They are often seen running at the railway crossings forgetting the safety measures.

One of the city dwellers, Shohel, told Bangladesh Post, “People hardly follow rules while crossing roads and level crossings. Carelessness has become a culture of the society. They race against the moving trains which is risky and absurd. We all should be more careful about the matter.”

Out of 1,412 authorised level crossings, 964 are unmanned, according to the latest document of Bangladesh Railways.

The steps include constructing speed breakers on each side of level crossings, reducing the number of illegal level crossings and erecting overpasses or underpasses in future projects, sources said.

Moreover, if the latest initiatives taken jointly by the Bangladesh Railway (BR), the Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) and road transport and bridges department take practical shapes, accidents and fatalities at level crossings -both authorised and unauthorised - may drastically come down.
