Almost every district of the country is connected with small and big rivers. Due to the  geographical location, waterways are one of the primary means of communication for about 25 percent of the rural population. Unfortunately, accidents also happen on the waterways from time to time. Such accidents occur due to overcrowding and incompetent drivers, natural calamities and a number of other reasons.

Since 2000, more than 25 mishaps have taken place in the river routes resulting in the death of more than 1500 people. Even then the launch owners or the concerned authorities are not alert in this major type of commute. Also, there is no information about illegal vessels plying in the country. On top of this, there are allegations that no effective action has been taken even though investigation reports of the fire service or shipping authority has been submitted to the ministries concerned.

The situation has been more or less the same over the years, but with no improvement there is still a high risk against the lives of masses. In addition there are also various allegations against launches on the waterways that they are violating safety laws, getting into competition between launches, lack of life saving equipment on the launches etc. This is very unfortunate to say the least.

It should be kept in mind that the number of naval accidents is increasing day by day in the country. The death toll is also rising along with the number of sunk launches. There are a number of accident cases still pending at the naval court in the country. The proceedings become more and more difficult to continue because of political ainfluence of the defendants.

Whatever the limitations there may be in this sector, it is imperative that they are overcome and the situation brought to bearing. It is the responsibility of the government to ensure the safety of people's lives and property. No negligence or laxity is acceptable in discharging this duty.
