Vast opportunities for Bangladesh after LDC exit

Says WTO Dy DG

Bangladesh will be able to maintain its growth in trade after exiting the list of Least Developed Countries (LDCs). 

Bangladesh has many opportunities to become a large-scale economy. Now private investment is most needed to accelerate its development. World Trade Organization (WTO) Deputy Director-General Xiangchen Zhang made these remarks at the opening ceremony of the Bangladesh Business Summit organized by Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center in the capital on Saturday.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the three-day international conference. On the occasion of FBCCI’s 50th anniversary, ministers and state ministers of seven countries are attending this mega event. More than 200 delegates from 17 countries are participating. Chief Executive Officers of 12 multinational companies were also present there.

The WTO Deputy Chief said, “Bangladesh is a country located in the Asia-Pacific region. The economy of this region is growing rapidly. The dynamic young entrepreneurs of Bangladesh are moving forward with new business ideas.”

He also felt that it is important to simplify rules and increase transparency for business and investment, and that Bangladesh has taken initiatives in this regard. WTO has worked in the interests of Bangladesh and is ready to help the country achieve its future development goals.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen, Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, Prime Minister's Private Industry and Investment Advisor Salman F. Rahman, Minister of Commerce of Saudi Arabia Dr. Majid bin Abdullah Al Qasabi, Chinese Vice Minister for Commerce Qian Keming, UK Minister of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Anne-Marie Trevelyan among others also spoke at the opening ceremony.

Past presidents of FBCCI and other business leaders and high level officials of the private sector were present at the inauguration ceremony.
