Manchester United are growing confident a deal can be agreed to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane after positive talks over the weekend.

Spanish outlet Deportes Cuatro were reporting on Monday morning that United and Real Madrid will announce the transfer of Varane ‘within the next few hours’.

Should the France international sign he would become the second major signing of the summer for United after they landed Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

United have been working on a deal to land the 28-year-old since agreeing terms to sign Sancho at the start of the month. Solskjaer knows he needs to strengthen his back line if United are to get closer to winning the title and the Real Madrid man has been earmarked as the ideal candidate.

United are pushing for a fee below €50 million, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein. Madrid are negotiating Varane’s exit price, which shows the willingness of all parties to reach an agreement. This week is believed to be key in the deal.

The centre-back has reportedly agreed personal terms with the Premier League outfit and it was only a matter of time before the LaLiga club were open to negotiating his departure from Madrid, a decade after joining Los Blancos from Lens.

Varane trained with Real Madrid on Monday. His current club were defeated 2-1 by Rangers at Ibrox on Sunday.
