US envoy urged to increase investment in Bangladesh

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi has called on the newly appointed United States Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter D Haas to increase investment and trade in Bangladesh.

“United States is a friend of Bangladesh. Trade and economic relations between the two countries are long standing. The United States is a major market for garment exports to Bangladesh. There are 157 certified factories of LEED green garments factory of USA in Bangladesh. Nine out of the top ten green factories of the world are from Bangladesh. Bangladesh is now the second largest exporter of readymade garments in the world,” he said.

The Commerce Minister made the remarks on Thursday while exchanging views with US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter D Haas at Bangladesh.

This was the first meeting of the Commerce Minister with the newly appointed US Ambassador.

The Commerce Minister said that the work of setting up 100 special economic zones in important places of the country under the direction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is progressing fast.  He said, “The construction work of many is now in its final stages. US investors will benefit if they invest in Bangladesh's special economic zone. The Government of Bangladesh is providing special facilities to investors.”

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter D Haas said, “Bangladesh is a friend of the United States and an important country. Economic and trade relations between the two countries are long standing. 

The development of Bangladesh is now visible. Bangladesh has already graduated from LDC and become a developing country. US economic and trade relations with Bangladesh will be further enhanced in the days to come.”

Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce (Exports) Md Hafizur Rahman, Additional Secretary (FTA) Nur mohammad Mahbubul Haque and Additional Secretary (Export-2) Abdur Rahim Khan was also present during the meeting.
