The work on the construction of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) went closer to its deadline with the completion of installing two polar crane beams on rail tracks.

According to Rosatom, a subsidiary of Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation, the subcontractor specialists - Trust RosSEM, Roin World LLC and Energospecmontazh JSC performed the major complex works at the plant recently.

Rosatom official said that the polar crane beams are the main metal structures of the crane, with the help of which the operations for the transportation and installation of the main technological equipment of the containment area (reactor vessel, steam generators, pressure compensator) will subsequently be carried out.

The beams of the polar crane were installed in the reactor building using a Liebherr heavy crawler crane, at an elevation of roughly 38 meters.

“Installation of heavy structures required complex and well-coordinated work of subcontractors. The specialists of Roin World LLC provided the preparation of the access road for lifting the beams by the crane, the specialists of Trust RosSEM completed the installation of containment lobes for the installation of the rail track at 38,500 m in the shortest possible time,” said the deputy director for project management of the branch of ASE JSC in the Bangladesh - chief project engineer Yuri Koshelev.

Currently, work is underway to install structures and crane mechanisms on crane runways.

Due to the movement of the crane along a circular path, it will be able to perform all loading and unloading operations at any point in the reactor compartment.

It is planned to complete the installation of the polar crane (circular crane) by June this year, then the installation of large and heavy equipment of the reactor plant of the first unit of the RNPP will begin.

After the RNPP is put into operation, the crane will be used for repair work and fuel transportation. The Rooppur NPP is being built with two reactors with a total capacity of 2,400 MW.

For the first nuclear power plant in Bangladesh, a Russian project with VVER-1200 reactors was selected, which was successfully implemented at two power units of the Novovoronezh NPP. This is a generation III project that fully meets international safety requirements.

RNPP is the country’s first nuclear power plant being implemented by Rosatom. The main construction work of the power plant is continuing at Rooppur in Pabna district while its essential machineries are being made in Russia.

It is a top priority project on the Bangladesh government’s agenda, all the way up to the Prime Minister’s Office. The project will host two units and the total capacity of the plant is to be 2,400 MW. It is expected that the power plant will start its operation by 2024.
