Two drug dealers killed in Teknaf ‘gunfight’

Two suspected yaba traders were killed in a reported gunfight with police at Bahalchhara North Shilkhali hill area at Teknaf upazila in Cox's Bazar on early Tuesday.

The deceased were identified as Md Amin, 37, son of Ula Miah of Shilkhali area under Baharchora union, and Helal Uddin Sumon, 21, son of Nur Mohammad of Sadar union under Teknaf upazila.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Teknaf Police Station Pradip Kumar Das said that law enforcers picked up Amin and Sumon on Monday midnight. After primary interrogation, police took Amin and Sumon along to raid the area around 1:00am to seized firearms and yaba.

“Sensing police presence, the yaba kingpin’s associates opened fire, prompting police to fire back, triggering a gunfight,” said Pradip. Caught in the line of fire, the duo as well as three policemen were injured, and were taken to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, said the OC.

The OC also claimed that two police officers, sub-inspectors Sajeeb Dey and Saif Uddin, Constable Sekandar Hossain were injured during the gunfight.

Amin and Sumon were later shifted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where doctors declared them dead.

Police recovered two locally made firearms, seven bullets and 5,000 contraband yaba pills from the spot, he added. A case was filed with Teknaf Police Station in this connection.
