Two Bangladeshi world champion teams participate in NASA programme

For the first time from Bangladesh two world champion teams of the NASA Space Apps Challenge organized by NASA participated in the NASA program at the NASA headquarters in Washington DC, USA. 

The NASA Space Apps Challenge organized by NASA under the auspices of Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) and in collaboration with BASIS Students Forum is organized in Bangladesh every year.

The two world champion teams of 2018 and 2021 were invited by NASA to participate in the NASA program on March 15-16, 2023 at the NASA headquarters in Washington DC, USA.

In 2018, the world champion team was Team Olikfrom Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) and in 2021 the champion was Team Mohakash, a combined team of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) and Bangladesh Army University of Engineering and Technology (BAUET).

Abu Sabiq Mahdi, SM Rafee Adnan and KaziMainul Islam participated in the program from Bangladesh of Team Olik at NASA Headquarters. Besides, another member Sabbir Hasan joined there as he is currently studying in Estonia. BarnitaBasak Trisha, Md. MomenulHaque and Shishir participated in the program from Bangladesh of Team Mohakash, besides another member and SumitChanda joined there as heis currently studying in USA.

Team Olik member Abu Sabiq Mahdi said, “We were invited to participate in the NASA program on March 15-16, 2023 at NASA headquarters in Washington, DC. To participate in the program, Team Mohakash left the country on March 12 and Team Olik left the country on March 13 for NASA headquarters. After participating in the program, both teams returned home together on March 21.”

Mahdi also said, “It was basically a celebration program of the winners of different years. During the two-day program at NASA, we participated in a variety of networking, communication and orientation discussions with NASA scientists on various aspects of working together with them in the future.”

However, in 2018, Team Olik won for the 'Lunar VR Project' Best Use of Data category for a virtual application that would experience travel to the moon, and the 2021, Team Mohakash became the World Champion in the 'NASA Best Mission Concept' category.

BASIS President Russell T. Ahmed said, “BASIS has been organizing the NASA Space Apps Challenge in Bangladesh for the past 10 years. Winning the title of World Champion of the NASA Apps Challenge is undoubtedly a great achievement. I congratulate to all members of Team Olik and Team Mohakashfor participating in the NASA program at the invitation of NASA. I also thank the non-Bangladeshi residents who have helped the two teams in USA in various ways.

Also, I would like to thank everyone concerned, especially Tanvir Hossain Khan, BASIS Director and Convener of NASA Space Apps Challenge Bangladesh, Ariful Hasan Opu, Advisor of NASA Space Apps Challenge Bangladesh, Mahdi-Uz-Zaman, Advisor of NASA Space Apps Challenge Bangladesh.”
