Transparency and accountability is a must for sustainable dev: LGRD minister

Local Government and Rural Development Minster Tajul Islam urged people to build ‘Sonar Bangla’ by ensuring transparency and accountability in their own sectors. 

Public engagement in different sectors can build ‘Sonar Bangla’ which was a dream of father of the nation Bangabndhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, he added.

He said this while speaking at a roundtable conference on water, sanitation and hygiene titled ‘WASH Governance and Sustainable Development Goals’ organized by Bangla daily Bhorer Kagoj and supported by Water Integrity Network (WIN) at the conference room of the daily in the capital.

The minister said, “Good governance cannot be ensured in a day. It’s a long process. Corruption has occupied from lower to higher level of government and private sectors. These corruption could not be prevented by only words. We have to awake ourselves in the spirit of patriotism and to ensure governance by preventing corruption.” 

He also said, “We have to be aware in using our natural resources and prevent wastage of natural gas and water. We also have to ensure safe waste management and need a good sewerage system.”

The speakers at the roundtable added that the 6th condition of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) is to ensure safe water and sanitation. Strong water governance is needed to achieve the 6th goal of SDGs.”

Among others, Bhorer Kagoj editor Shyamal Datta,  Public Health Department Chief Engineer Saifur Rahman, USTC Executive Director Shan Md Anwar Kamal, Director of NGO Forum for Bangladesh SMA Rashid, Water Integrity Network consultant Sifat-e-Rabbi also addressed the programme.
