Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU), the specialised counter terrorism unit of Bangladesh Police, arrested a top leader of banned militant group Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh from Baridhara area in the capital Dhaka.

Talking to the Bangladesh Post, Additional Deputy Inspector General (Adl DIG) of the ATU Md Moniruzzaman confirmed it on Wednesday.

He said, “We primarily identified him as Faisal Khan Kanchan alias Fahim (34), son of Md Akram Hossain Khan, hailing from Hakimpur Upazila under Dinajpur district.”

Adl DIG Moniruzzaman also claimed that they came to know that Fahim has close links with the absconding top brass militants who are currently in different states of India.

Responding to another question, the leading anti-terrorism unit expert said, basically Fahim was working to ensure bails of the detained top militant leaders. On behalf of the banned terrorists outfit, he was maintaining regular contacts with lawyers regarding the bails of the high profile militants, Adl DIG Moniruzzaman added.

The senior counter terrorism unit official further said, “The arrested militant himself is one of the top full-time militants in guise of businessman.”

The ATU top official also said that Fahim, a leader of the liaison wing of the JMB, was arrested around 8:30am on Wednesday when he was on his way to join a meeting with his other accomplices.

The arrestee in coordination with others had been planning subversive activities and killing important people in the county. A case was filed with Bhatara Police Station under Anti-terrorism Act in this connection.
