Lack of access to electricity has been known as one of the major impediments to the growth and development of rural economies. Now, in a bid to safeguard uninterrupted power supply in Khulna division and other rural areas of the country, our government has undertaken a big initiative to augment the capacity and also ensure modernisation of distribution network of Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB).

According to a report published in this daily on Tuesday, The BREB under the Power Division will implement the project with an estimated cost of Taka 3,076.22 crore by June 2025.

If the project is implemented then it will augment the network capacity of BREB alongside upgrading it. This will meet the growing demand of power, ensure uninterrupted power supply, provide cost efficient power distribution system and this will ultimately lead to reduction of system loss in power distribution.

The project will also help to enhance household incomes as it will reduce expenses on kerosene for cooking as well as lighting and provide opportunities for various energy based economic activities. The people in the rural areas should be made aware of the benefits they can avail from the power distribution system, which will ultimately lead to reduction in their household expenses.

To provide a safe, efficient and productive electricity usage BREB should make sure that they manage the power stations in an efficient manner by hiring skilled manpower, so that no disruptions occur during the operation of the newly installed power stations.

Our government should also consider the contribution of renewable energy to Bangladesh’s overall power generation as it still remains insignificant. A reliable and sustainable electricity distribution is  very significant aspect to our country’s growth and development alongside enhancing peoples’ standard of living.
