Tipu ‘Razakar’ sentenced to death

The International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced another rajakar to death in the case of crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

The tribunal has ordered the death sentence of Abdul Sattar alias Tipu Razakar alias Tipu Sultan. On the three-member international criminal tribunal led by Justice Md Shahinur Islam announced the verdict.

Prosecutor Mukhlesur Rahman Badal, Sabina Yasmin Khan Munni and Tapos Kanti Bol represented the state. Ghazi MH Tamim was advocate for the accused. Tipu Sultan from Boalia in Rajshahi has been charged with two counts of crimes against humanity including torture, looting and killings during the Liberation War.

‘The accused was charged with killing ten people in Boalia, torturing two persons in captivity for a long time, looting and launching arson attacks on 13 houses during the Liberation War’, said prosecutor Badal.

During the attack, Awami League leader Chand Mia and Azhar Ali Sheikh were arrested and tortured. During this time, they looted 12 to 15 houses in Talimari area. Later, on the night of November 7, six people were taken to a temporary camp and torture cell set up at Shaheed Shamozhoha Hall of Rajshahi University and shot dead.

According to the prosecution, Tipu was an active follower of Islamic Chhatra Sangha, then student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, and joined Razakar Bahini in his locality when the war began.

Tipu Sultan was arrested on Aug 10, 1974 but was released later. He was again arrested on Jan 1, 2017 by the police in a case under the Explosives Act. Later, he was shown arrested in a war crime case.
