Three to die in Kakrail mother-son murder trial

A Dhaka court on Sunday sentenced three people to death in the case filed over the murder of a woman and her son in city’s Kakrail area.

The death convicted are Abdul Karim, the slain woman’s husband, Karim’s second wife Sharmin Akter Mukta and Mukta’s brother Md Al Amin Jonny. 

Judge Md Rabiul Alam of Dhaka Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court pronounced the verdict.

The accused were present in court during the verdict. The court also fined all three of the accused Tk20,000 each.

Earlier in 2017, Shamsun Nahar and her 17-year-old son Sajjadul Karim Shaon were killed at their resident in city’s Kakrail area.

The court recorded statements of 17 out of 22 prosecution witnesses including the complainant of the case.

They were murdered due to family dispute over property, according to the case documents.

Ashraf Ali, brother of Shamsun Nahar, filed the murder case with Ramna Police Station.

Police arrested Abdul Karim and Mukta from the capital Dhaka on November 3 in 20107. RAB arrested Mukta's brother Johny from Moksedpur upazila of Gopalganj on November 4 of the same year in connection with the double murder.

Johny gave confessional statement in the case to a Dhaka magistrate.

On July 16 in 2018, Md Ali Hossain, an inspector of Ramna Police Station, pressed charges against Abdul Karim, Mukta and Johny.

On January 31 in 2019, the court framed charges against the trio.
