Opener Tamim Iqbal decided to opt out the three-match T20 International series against New Zealand, citing personal problems.

Tamim, the captain of Bangladesh ODI team said that he had already let the decision know to the head coach Russell Domingo and chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu.

Tamim didn’t elaborate the reason but said he had informed his decision to the team management even before arriving in New Zealand.

“The decision was taken even before coming to New Zealand,” Tamim said.

“I had informed the head coach and chief selector that I won’t be available for the T20I series due to some personal reasons. My best wishes are with the team. When the coach said that we have an opportunity to do well here, it includes the T20Is as well.”

Mahmudullah Riyad is the captain of Bangladesh T20 side, which will play the three matches in this format against New Zealand, scheduled to be held on March 28, 30 and April 1. Bangladesh is yet to name the T20 squad.

Ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan earlier skipped the entire New Zealand series. So Tamim’s unavailability is another blow to the team. Tamim played so far 74 T20 Internationals and is currently the team’s highest run-getter. He is Bangladesh’s only centurion in the format and also has made eight fifties so far.

Bangladesh last played a T20I against Zimbabwe last year. The three-match T20 series against New Zealand was their first preparation campaign to gear up for this year’s T20 World Cup in India. They also have T20I series planned against Zimbabwe, Australia, England and New Zealand later in the year.
