Tailor Obaidul sentenced to death for Risha murder

A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced sole accused tailor Obaidul Khan to death and fined him Taka 50,000 in a case lodged over the murder of Wills Little Flower School student Suraia Akter Risha, reports BSS.

Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge KM Imrul Qayes passed the order in presence of the convict and sent him to jail with conviction warrant. A group of students of Wills Little Flower School were present on the court premises, holding a banner, demanding capital punishment for the killer.

Risha’s mother Tania Hossain expressed satisfaction over the judgment and broke into tears. She demanded quick execution of the verdict. The court on October 6 deferred till Thursday pronouncement of judgment in the case as the jail authorities could not produce the accused before court from Kashimpur Central Jail.

The court on September 11 had set October 6 to pass verdict as both the prosecution and defence concluded their arguments on that day.
Risha, a student of capital’s Wills Little Flower School and College, was knifed by accused Obaidul in front of the school on August 24, 2016. The eighth-grader succumbed to her injuries in hospital four days later.

Obaidul Khan, a tailor by profession, used to disturb over phone and stalk the girl. Risha’s mother warned him for his offense. Obaidul fled capital after stabbing Risha. Obaidul was arrested on August 31, 2016, from Nilphamari and confessed his crimes during the primary interrogation. Police on November 14, 2016, submitted charge sheet against Obaidul. The court on April 17, 2017, framed charges against him in the case.
