The maize farming has become more popular among the farmers is Sylhet region. Farmers of Sylhet region are opting for its farming for last few years due to help of Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).

Earlier, farmers of this region were used to cultivate different types of paddies and vegetables.

Now a days this trend is changing slightly as the farmers are getting facilities from the DAE, while are becoming the beneficiary after cultivating the maize crops.

According to the Sylhet DAE, the maize cultivation has increased in Sylhet district. At present there are 260 hectors of land were brought under maize cultivation in the district. It was only 30 to 50 hectors of land under cultivation of the crop in past two or three years, said the Abul Hasem, Deputy Director of Sylhet DAE.

The farmers of this area are now passing busy time as the harvesting season is going on.

Abul Kalam, a maize farmer of Golapganj upazila in the district, said he decided to begin maize cultivation following the loss in the  Boro cultivation. He had to count loss in Boro farming due flash flood in last few years.

The farmer said that he has been inspired in maize farming following the support of local agriculture office.  “I get more benefit from maize farming than Boro paddy,” he added.

Like him, many other farmers of this region are showing eagerness in maize farming for better output than Boro paddy as the Boro is damaged by the flood.
