Rapid Action Battalion said on Monday that they arrested the ringleader of a trafficking gang, who trafficked some of the 26 Bangladeshi nationals killed in Libya last week.

The arrestee, Md Kamal Uddin alias Haji Kamal, 55, of Kushtia Sadar is a leader of traffickers and he was arrested in a drive of the elite force at Khilbarirtek of capital’s Gulshan about 5:00am, a press release issued by RAB said.

It said that he sent more than 400 people to Libya illegally in past one decade and that Kamal sent more than one member to Libya who were either killed or injured.

The release said that trafficking leader Kamal worked as a tiles conductor in Dhaka, where he came in touch with many poor workers, who he lured to go to Libya or some other Middle-East countries for better wages.

“He tells them you can earn Tk 500 to Tk 600 a day here but if you go to Libya or any country from Middle East you can easily earn Tk 5,000 to Tk 6,000 a day,” the release said.

“We got the address of several village touts, who bought people to Dhaka. Haji Kamal, who we managed to arrest, is their man leader. He is involved in collecting money from families and sending the money [to other traffickers] illegally,” it said.
RAB said that the traffickers use the route of India, Dubai and Egypt before taking the Bangladeshis to Benghazi in Libya despite no work available for them there.

“We got every name who are involved in the trafficking…they are all Bangladeshi,” it said.
On May 28, Libyan militias shot dead 26 Bangladeshis in southern Mizdah town, 180km south of Tripoli.
