Awami League General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader Saturday said the government has taken strategic actions to repatriate the forcibly displaced Rohingyas to their homeland in the Rakhine state of Myanmar, reports BSS.

“There is no failure of the government to repatriate the Rohingyas . . . Here are some strategic actions in this connection,” he said while speaking at a mourning discussion organized by “BRTC Sramik-Karmachari League” at Diploma Engineers’ Institution in Dhaka. The minister said: “Myanmar government is facing serious pressure soon after the Rohingyas fled away to Bangladesh territory. Rohingya people do not have trust in their government as it failed to create any congenial atmosphere, ensure security and settle citizenship issue there.”

Noting that they (Rohingyas) were brutally tortured in their ancestral land and Myanmar must shoulder its responsibility, he said, “We won’t choose the path of battle. Our relentless efforts would continue to exert pressure on Myanmar and we are tactfully handling the issue.” Referring to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s diplomatic success in this regard, the AL general secretary said the government in the meantime attained a significant success in getting international support, including that of the United Nations organizations and Europe, and efforts still continue to resolve the crisis through discussions.

“Rohingyas should return to their motherland in a safe and dignified manner. We’re trying for that,” Quader added. About the adverse affect in Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf areas after the influx of Rohingyas there, the minister said giving shelter to Myanmar nationals, the country’s tourism, ecology, the world’s largest sea beach and economy are being affected to a large extent.

State Minister for Labour and Employment Begum Monnujan Sufian, BRTC chairman Farid Ahmed Bhuiyan and Jatiya Sramik League president Shukkur Mahmud and acting president of BRTC Sramik-Karmocahri League Md Abdul Kader also took part in the discussion.
