‘Stop unplanned dev at JU’

Teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) brought out a procession on the campus on Thursday protesting the unplanned development at JU. 

The Teacher- Student Unity brought out the procession from the Tarjan Premises of the campus which ended in front of old register building. They also held a short rally.

Speaking at the rally, Prof Dr. Anwarullah Bhuyian said, “The university administration has taken the initiative to construct some unplanned building in the name of development. We have been saying for a long time that before constructing any building, we must protect the biodiversity of the place.”

“The architect made the plan ignoring the eco-system and they were loyal to JU administration. They did not care for the biodiversity. We are strongly opposing the construction of those unplanned building," said Rayhan Rhyne, associate professor of Philosophy department.

Ashikur Rahman, president of Cultural Alliance, said, “If the building is not constructed in a planned way, the authority will suffer in the long run. We condemn this kind of autocratic decision of the administration.”

Leaders and activists of various kinds of social and political organisations of JU were present at the procession.

The students vowed to continue the protest until the decisions of JU administration is not changed.

On Wednesday, the administration revealed the ‘revised master plan’ at the senate building and pointing out many impropriety some students and teachers requested the Vice-Chancellor (VC) to get back the project for three months. But the VC said that it is no longer possible.
