Stocks break 4-week gaining streak

Stocks broke a four-week gaining streak in the last week as the investors showed profit booking tendency throughout the week.

DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went down by 45 points or 0.69 percent at 6,515, after rising 411 points in the previous four weeks.

Market analysts said many investors were busy selling their shares particularly on cement, financial institutions, pharma, power and banking sector stocks to book profits, which pushed down in the market.

Most of the investors followed a cautious stance as the Bangladesh Bank embraced a floating exchange rate for inter-bank transactions that devalued taka against dollar, they said.

On the other hand, some investors who went on a buying spree on some particularly lucrative shares on the last day of the week tried to instill some positive momentum, they mentioned.

The DS30 Index, comprising blue-chip companies, decreased by 29.82 points to settle at 2,346 and the DSEX Index dropped 11.69 points to close at 1,429.

The week's total turnover decreased to Tk 70.83 billion on the DSE as against Tk 90.91 billion in the previous week.

The daily average turnover stood at Tk 14.16 billion, down 22 percent over the previous week's average of Tk 18.18 billion.

Losers took a strong lead over the gainers as out of 388 issues traded, 183 ended lower, 96 higher and 109 issues remained unchanged on the DSE floor.

Beximco was the most-traded stock with shares of Tk 9.12 billion changing hands during the week.

It was followed by Orion Pharma, JMI Hospital Requisite Manufacturing, LafargeHolcim and Shinepukur Ceramics.

JMI Hospital Requisite Manufacturing was the top gainer, soaring 24.92 percent while Sunlife Insurance Company was the week's worst loser, losing 9.59 percent.

On the other hand, the port city bourse, the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) saw lower growth with its selective category index (CSCX) losing 82 points in the last week to close at 11,472 points.

The All-Share Price Index (CASPI) of the CSE was also lower by 135 points to close at 19,141 points.

Of the 334 issues traded, 158 advanced, 91 declined and 85 remained unchanged on the CSE trading floor.

The port city's bourse traded 33.40 million shares and mutual fund units with turnover value of Tk 144 crore during the last week.
