Agriculture Minister Dr Md Abdur Razzaque said, "We want to be self-sufficient in onion seed production. We also want to be self-sufficient in onion production using these seeds. We are working towards this goal.”

“In one year we have increased the production of seven lakh tons of onion. Summer onion cultivation is also being expanded. Hopefully, soon we will be able to become self-sufficient in onion seeds and onion production,” he said.

The Agriculture Minister said this while inspecting Shahida Begum's onion seed production farm at Gobindganj in Sadar upazila of Faridpur on Thursday morning.

The minister also said that loans would be provided to onion farmers and incentives would be provided to those affected by natural calamities.

Mentioning that the farmers have to be protected from losses, the minister said that the farmers are cultivating onions with much risk and hard work.

“We are monitoring the market every day. If the price of onion goes down further, steps will be taken to stop import and increase the

price,” he said.

The minister said prices are lower during the onion production season and farmers are affected. If the import of onion is stopped, the price goes up a little, it increases the suffering of the consumers and the criticism starts.
