FSUE Atomflot, a subsidiary of Rostaom State Corporation of Russia has signed a contract with a Russian shipbuilder Zvezda for construction of the nuclear icebreaker –Leader, according to Rostom official press release.
Under the contract signed by FSUE Atomflot Director General Mustafa Kashka and Zvezda Director General Sergey Tseluyko on April 23 Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex will act as the sole contractor for this Rosatom project. The vessel is expected to be commissioned in 2027.
The nuclear icebreaker will allow Russia to ensure safe and regular operations in the eastern region of the Arctic Ocean, year-round navigation in the waters of the Northern Sea Route. The nuclear icebreaker, Leader will be equipped with two RITM-400 nuclear reactors with a total caoacity of 120 MW.
The icebreaker ship will be 209 metres long and 47.7 metres wide. It will have maximum speed of 22 knots and maximum ice penetration capacity of 4 metres.
