RTI becomes an effective tool for good governance

Workshop on RTI’s role over investigative journalism held

Chief Information Commissioner Dr Abdul Malek on Wednesday said the Right to Information Act (RTI) has become an effective tool for the good governance. 

He also said that the use and practice of the law should be increased in order to accelerate the development of the country and to institutionalize sustainable democracy.

He made the statement while presiding over a workshop on “Media and Investigative Journalism on Right to Information” organized by Information Commission at its conference room at Agargaon in the capital.

The workshop was organised with the aim of encouraging journalists to practice investigative journalism using the Right to Information Act and to receive informed opinions from media personalities and journalists.

Dr Abdul Malek said, “The country is continuously progressing on the path of rapid development. The key step forward is transparency and accountability, one of the tools of which is the Right to Information Act.”

The RTI is very effective in preparing in-depth investigative reports containing pure information, he said.

The Chief Information Commissioner called upon the journalists to use the Right to Information Act to prepare investigative news items in media. 

Managing Director of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Abul Kalam Azad was present as the main discussant while President of National Press Club Farida Yasmin was present as special guest.

Former Information Commissioner Nepal Chandra Sarkar presented the keynote at the workshop. 

The workshop was conducted by Secretary of Information Commission Dr Md Abdul Hakim. 

The workshop was held with the participation of media personalities, senior journalists and key stakeholders working in various print and electronic media of the country.
