Pond is an integral part for keeping our ecosystem sustainable. In a capital full of rubbles, a pond is a rare sight. Once Dhaka was filled with ponds and small water reservoirs but because of relentless urban development ponds can be hardly seen now.

As a result, during the monsoon, Dhaka residents suffer from waterlogging in different parts of the city. Now the government wants to undertake a project to retain ponds and re-acquire lands that are illegally occupied.

Various illegal infrastructures have been built on government-acquired land, which is hampering the drainage system. Due to illegal occupation, entire water reservoirs have been filled with multi-storey buildings, housing company projects and various installations. That is why the work is being done to restore those places and reserve this water through Dhaka WASA.

The authorities  concerned should collaborate with both the

city corporations and provide them with proper plan and

logistical support to make the drainage system more active

It certainly is a good initiative if implemented properly. We should also develop the usage of existing surface and underground drains properly, which is another pivotal reason for water-logging even after a moderate rain.

The authorities concerned should collaborate with  both the city corporations and provide them with proper plan and logistical support to make the drainage system more active. After retaining those lands, the government should start the project work immediately so that the land grabbers cannot reoccupy those lands illegally again.

Therefore, alongside our rapid economic development, we also have to make sure that we do not achieve it at the cost of destroying our nature. We should think of development in a nature-friendly way.
