Records Covid deaths in a day in Bangladesh

Bangladesh reported 77 deaths from Covid-19 on Saturday in the last 24 hours which is the highest in a single day since the beginning of the pandemic. The total number of fatalities reached at 9,661with this new record. 

However, the rate of daily infected cases has dropped. The total number of infected cases rose to 6,78,937 with 5,343 fresh cases recorded in the last 24 hours on Saturday.

The information was provided through a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Saturday.

Among the deceased, 53 were men and 24 were women. All of them died in different hospitals across the country.

A total of 26,077 samples were tested across the country till 8am on Saturday. 7,462 people tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday and 6,854 on Thursday. The current infection rate stands at 20.49 percent, while the overall infection rate in the country stands at 13.65 percent.

A total number of 5,72,378 people have recovered so far. The recovery rate stands at 84.30 percent.

Due to the spike in Covid-19 deaths and cases, the government has decided to go into a weeklong strict lockdown from April 14 to curb the transmission of coronavirus. The government announced the upcoming strict lockdown as the existing lockdown to restrict public movement turned out to be ineffective.

Bangladesh reported the first cases of Covid-19 on March 8 last year. The first death from coronavirus in the country was recorded on March 18.

Over 134.71 million people have been infected by the coronavirus across the world and 2.91 million have died so far.  The virus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, turning into a pandemic within a short period of time.
