The 90th birth anniversary of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, wife of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was observed across the country on Saturday with the theme ‘Bangamata is the courageous symbol of sacrifice and beauty’.

Born on August 8 in 1930 at Tungipara village in Gopalganj, she was killed brutally by a bunch of murderers on August 15, 1975. Throughout her life, Begum Mujib remained the key source of inspiration, strength and courage for Bangabandhu. She became Bangamata because of her unparalleled sacrifice, empathy and ingenuity. Bangamata had played a prudent role in building the nation staying beside the Father of the Nation. In all critical times in different phases of the national history, Begum Mujib helped Bangabandhu take the right decisions. When Bangabandhu was in jail, she guided the party leaders and workers like a leader and guardian as well.

Bangamata had played a significant role from behind the scene for Bangabandhu's historic 7th March speech. She played a key role during the crucial political event of the Agartala conspiracy case. Despite pressure from various quarters, she sent a message to Bangabandhu who was then behind bars not to accept the proposal of coming out of jail on parole.

She will remain alive in the hearts of cross-sections

of people and be remembered for her

sacrifice, patriotism and love for the people

Fazilatunnesa Mujib was not only the wife of the Father of the Nation but also the behind-the-scene architect of the struggle for independence of Bangladesh. She gave inspiration and courage to Bangabandhu so that he could lead the struggle of independence and Liberation War to the right direction.

When faced with political uncertainties outside, she shouldered the responsibility of raising five children in a calm and composed manner. No doubt, her support at home made it possible for Bangabandhu to devote full energy to working for the creation of Bangladesh.

Our country will remember her contribution with great respect. She will remain alive in the hearts of cross-sections of people and be remembered for her sacrifice, patriotism and love for the people. History would certainly remember and value the contribution of this great patriotic lady. The ideology and examples Bangamata had set will remain a source of inspiration for the Bengali women throughout the ages.
