Rangpur Express derails; 5 bogies catch fire

Within a span of two days of the Brahmanbaria deadly train crash, yet another train accident took place at Ullapara in Sirajganj district on Thursday.

At least eight compartments and the locomotive of Lalmonirhat bound Rangpur Express train from capital Dhaka derailed and five of them caught fire at about 1.30pm.

However, no casualty was reported till filing this report.

Our Rajshahi Correspondent adds; the Rangpur Express train was entering Ullapara train station around 2-00 pm on Thursday when five bogies of the train including the engine derailed.  Fire and smoke was seen billowing from inside four derailed bogies. There was no report of death or casualties from the accident till to the writing of the report at 3-30 pm.

The rail communication from Dhaka with the northern region of the country remained snapped following the accident. West zone railway sources informed, relief train with the rescue team has already arrived at the spot. 

Earlier on November 12, a deadly train accident took place in Brahmanbaria leaving 16 people killed and over 100 injured.

The fatal train accident occurred when a Dhaka-bound Turna Nishita from Chattogram collided with Chattogram-bound Udayan Express from Sylhet in the early hours of Tuesday. At least two coaches of Udayan Express were severely damaged in the accident.

Mihir Kanti Guha, General Manager of West Zone railway informed, he was attending a meeting  in Dhaka when the accident occurred. 

The rescue team with railway engineers has started for the place of accident.  Action has been taken to remove the derailed bogies as soon as possible to resume the train service through the track. 

He added, action will be taken accordingly after investigation of the incident.

Nazir Hossain, station officer of Ullapara Fire Service and Civil Defence, said five bogies, including the locomotive, derailed near Ullapara railway station at around 130pm. 

Later, four of them caught fire immediately, he said, adding that the reason behind the fire could not be known. Hossain, however, could not exactly say about any casualty in the incident.

Talking to a news agency, Railway Secretary Md Mofazzal Hossain said, seven compartments of the Rangpur-bound train from Dhaka veered off the track near Ullapara Railway Station around 2 pm.

“Train communication will resume as soon as officials and employees concerned start rescue operation, he added.

Three compartments caught fire after derailment of the train, said Tutul Chakraborty, Superintendent of Police (SP).

On information, members of the fire service rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control with the help of local people.
