Project taken to dredge Feni River

The government has undertaken a project to dredge the Feni River for preventing it from erosion and to block its tendency of changing the course besides ensuring its smooth flow of water. The Water Resources Ministry sources said Bangladesh Water Development Board has taken the initiative under the project named 'Protecting Nangal Mora and Jagatjibanpur areas under Chhagalnaiya and Sadar Upazilas’.

Bangladesh Water Development Board will implement the project at a cost of Tk 46.71 crore by June 2021. Sources said that the Nangal Mora of Chhagalnaiya Upazila and Jagatjibanpur area of Feni Sadar upazila will be protected from the erosion of the Feni River. The project also aims to make Jagatjibanpur of Sadar upazila and Nangal Mora of Chhagalnaiya upazila in Feni as a flood-free area.

Once the project is implemented, resources worth around Tk 387.50 crore will be protected. The project will reduce poverty, improve living hood conditions and create opportunities of job employment by ensuring stable and sustainable agriculture. The project aims to develop socio-economic condition and social security of the area and the environment of the project area will be protected from adverse effects.

Sources said that dredging in the river is necessary to prevent the Feni River from erosion as well as change the course of the river. As a result, it will be easier to protect the banks of Feni River. Planning Minister MA Mannan has already approved the project as the cost of the project is less than Tk 50 crore.
