President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday called upon all to play their respective role in ensuring rule of law and justice in the society. They made the call on the eve of National Legal Aid Services Day, which falls today. The President and Prime Minister gave separate messages marking the day, reports BSS.
President M Abdul Hamid in his message said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had dreamt of building a democratic and prosperous country, which will be free from any sorts of discrimination. “Ability of taking equal refuge of justice has been recognized as a basic right in our constitution. The government has formulated National Legal Aid Services Act in 2000 to ensure the basic right declared in the constitution.”
“Now the poor and impoverished population is getting legal assistance at the government’s cost as we have made the concerned act effective,” he said.
The President hoped that the observance of National Legal Aid Services Day would play important role in ensuring accessibility of all in the activities carrying out by the government in this regard.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina reiterated her government’s relentless effort to establish the rule of law and human rights in the country. “We have formulated National Legal Aid Services Act in 2000 to ensure the fact that no citizen can be deprived of justice because of poverty or any other socio-economic reasons.”
“Government is giving legal assistance and advice free of cost to poor and helpless people.
Disputes are being resolved through alternative dispute resolution (ADR) at district legal aid offices, which I believe would play an important role in easing backlog of cases,” she said. The prime minister also hoped that a peaceful, developed and prosperous Bangladesh would be built by ensuring the rule of law in all strata of the society with the efforts of all.
