We applaud the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for achieving the country's great success in electricity generation.

We think there would be no shortage of power this summer as the government’s power division is prepared to meet the demand surge associated with this season.

Once, the nation had to face serious difficulties due to a chronic power supply crunch. Besides, the country's many industries, factories and business establishments were forced to shut their activities down due to power outages and low voltage. But those days are now gone as the country has now transformed from a power-shortage country into a power-surplus country. The adequate supply of electricity is also playing a crucial role to attract foreign countries to invest here.

When Sheikh Hasina led Awami League government assumed office in 2009, the average power demand at the time was about 6,000MW while power generation capacity of the country was less than 5000MW. Eight to ten hours load-shedding in summer days was causing unbearable miseries. The country now generates 13,520 megawatts electricity per day. And it is capable of generating 14,000MW of electricity right now.

The present government has implemented various projects to set up coal-based power plants as an alternative to natural gas. Some mega projects are being implemented at Payra, Moheshkhali and Matarbari, classifying these areas as power hubs. Besides, the country’s first nuclear power plant is now under construction at Rooppur in Pabna.

We also appreciate the power division for its all out efforts to provide uninterrupted power supply to relieve the people from the intense heat wave and ongoing pandemic situation in the country.

We believe as electricity is the most essential element for the country's overall development, the government will also light up every house by boosting the power generation.

Besides, the government will have to take an awareness campaign on consumption above sanctioned load, which can cause power cuts.
