People pay tribute to Ajoy Roy at Shaheed Minar

People from all strata paid their tributes to Ekushey Padak winner and one of the founders of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee Professor Ajoy Roy at the Central Shaheed Minar on Tuesday, reports BSS.

Initially, the body of Ajoy Roy was taken from BIRDEM mortuary to his residence in city’s Baily Road area in the morning where his family members, including son Anujit Roy and daughter-in-law Keya Barmon, and a host of his relatives and admires were present. Later, the body of the renowned educationist was taken to the Central Shaheed Minar where people from all strata paid their tributes under the arrangement of the Sammilita Sangskritik Jote.

At first, National Professor Dr Anisuzzaman paid rich tribute to Ajoy Roy, the father of slain blogger Avijit Roy. A guard of honour was given to deceased Roy, who was a freedom fighter, on behalf of the Dhaka District administration. Cultural Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League (AL) Advocate Asim Kumar Ukil, MP, paid tribute to Roy on behalf of his party at the Shaheed Minar.

AL Information and Research Secretary Advocate Afzal Hossain, Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, Education and Human Resource Affairs Secretary Shamsunnahar Chapa, Health and Population Affairs Secretary Dr Rokeya Sultana and Deputy Publicity Secretary and also the special assistant to the Prime Minister Barrister Biplab Barua were present on the occasion.

Former Dhaka University vice-chancellors Prof Emajuddin Ahmed and AK Azad Chowdhury, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JASOD) President Hasanul Haq Inu and leaders of different socio-cultural organizations paid glowing tribute to him. All of them stood in solemn silence there for some time as a mark of profound respect to Roy. As per Roy’s last wish, his body will be donated to BIRDEM Hospital for the medical-science research. Prof Ajoy breathed his last on Monday while undergoing treatment at BIRDEM Hospital at the age of 85.
