People benefited from DPHE’s public toilets in Jhenidah

The people one after another has been using public toilets and leaving the spot putting Taka five in the plastic basket set in front of the toilets. This unbelievable activity was seen at Bhtai Bazer of Shailkupa upazila in Jhenidah. The system has created a new era of common sense among the people to lead honest life for each and everybody, said the Bazer management committee leader Badsha Alamgir.

The toilets have been maintaining the healthy environment, as well as some poor people from the cleaners’ community have been maintaining their families with the income from the service charges.

Talking to a number of people at the populous vegetable and cattle market of the district, the locals and users said when thousands of people including buyers and sellers of various commodities and agro-products, as well as cattle heads in the market for want of any toilet facilities, the department of public health (DPHE) had constructed four attractive and luxurious and public toilets to ease the sufferings. They said the demand for establishing this sort of toilets has been increasing day by day.

Abdur Rahman, cattle trader of Santhia in Pabna informed thousands of businessmen like him had been suffering a lot for want of toilet facilities in the market. The environment of the market was so poor that turned to a depot poor breeding mosquitoes and other harmful insects or diseases. “Now I can use the latrine, bathroom, ojukhana and other facilities with Taka five at any time”.

A bus passenger Sabita Rani said she visits the area frequently for job purposes. The newly constructed public toilet has been protecting them from odd situation and natural calls.

Sabita expressed her opinion that this sort of public toilets should be established at populous hat-bazers and important spots throughout the country that will ease the sufferings of the people, and also help ensure better health for all.

Sub assistant engineer (SAE) of the DPHE at Shailkupa Saiful Islam when contacted, said each toilet was constructed at a cost of Taka 12.5 lakh that contains three latrines for men, two for women, a separate bathroom and ojukhana and three improved quality basins for washing.

Executive engineer of the DPHE in Jhenidah Jahid Parvez said they have constructed four public toilets at Halidhani Bazer of Jhenidah Sadar, Bhatai Bazer of Shailkupa, Khalishpur of Moheshpur and Mangalpota of Kaliganj upazila with the GoB) government) fund for a better and healthy nation as desired by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

They are preparing report about the increasing demand of the toilets at other parts with the GoB funds, Parvez added.
