PBI finalises chargesheet against 16 over Nusrat murder

The Police Bureau of Investigation has finalised the chargesheet against 16 people in the death of Feni madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi. PBI chief Banaj Kumar Majumder on Tuesday said they will press charges against them before the court on today (Wednesday). Briefing reporters at PBI headquarters in the capital’s Dhanmondi, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the PBI Banaj Kumar said during their long investigation, they found the involvement of 16 people including Principal Siraj-ud-Daula in the arson attack on the madrasa girl that led to her death.

Of them, 12 gave confessional statements before the court, he said, adding that they sought the highest punishment for the accused. The PBI chief said a total of 92 people have been made witnesses in the case and seven of them have already testified before the court. The other accused to be charge-sheeted are Shahadat Hossain Shamim, Nur Uddin, Imran Hossain Mamun, Hafez Abdul Quader, Iftekhar Uddin Rana, Councillor Maksud Alam alias Moksud, Kamrunnahar Moni, Saifur Rahman Mohammad Zobair, Javed, Umme Sultana Popy, Mohiuddin Shakil, Mohammad Shamim, Abdur Rahim Sharif and Absar Uddin.

Nusrat had been tricked onto the roof of the madrasa where the perpetrators set her on fire on Apr 6 for not withdrawing the sexual assault case against the principal. She lost her battle for life on April 10 at Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the capital. Nusrat’s brother Mahmudul Hasan Noman filed a case on Apr 8 naming eight persons, including the principal as the main accused.
