Officer-in-charge (OC) of Government Railway Police Station in Khulna Osman Gani Pathan and Sub-Inspector Nazmul Haque have been closed over alleged involvement in gang-rape and harassment of a woman in police custody.

The police administration closed the officials on Wednesday.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Kushtia Railway Circle Firoz Ahmed confirmed the news.

The Police Headquarters on Tuesday formed a three-member probe committee, headed by Shehela Parvin, superintendent of Railway Police, to investigate the incident.

The body was asked to submit its report within seven working days, said Assistant Inspector General (media) Md Sohel Rana.

Earlier on Monday, the Railway Police had formed another three-member committee, headed by ASP Firoz Ahmed. It would also file its report within seven days.

Earlier on Friday evening, the woman came to Khulna from Jashore by train to visit her mother, who was undergoing treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH).

The family sources said that around 7:30pm, the woman was detained inside the train by railway police in Phultala Railway Station.

She was then taken to Khulna Railway Police Station where OC Osman Gani Pathan first raped her. After that, the other policemen took turns in raping her.

The next day, the alleged rapists filed a case against the victim for possessing five bottles of Phensedyl, after which a court sent her to jail.

On Sunday, the victim filed a bail petition with the district’s additional chief judicial magistrate’s court and filed the complaint against the policemen.

The court then sent her to KMCH for a medical test.

KMCH’s chief of forensics department Dr Shafiuzzaman said her medical test was completed and the report would be released soon.

The victim’s sister alleged that OC Osman also offered a large sum of money to cover up the incident. The family were warned not to take further steps over the issue as the family refused to take the money.

While contacted, the OC denied the allegations and claimed he was not present at the police station that night.

SP Mohammad Nazrul Islam said they would take further legal steps, following the medical test and probe reports.
