The State-run North-West Power Generation Company Ltd (NWPGCL) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) Tuesday night with China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CMC) to develop 500-megawatt (MW) renewable energy-based power plant projects. NWPGCL managing director, Md Khurshedul Alam, and CMC chairman, Ruan Guang signed the MoU on behalf of their respective sides at InterContinental Hotel in the city.

Under the agreement, a renewable power company will be formed with joint ownership titled Bangladesh –China Power Company. NWPGCL and CMC will have 50-50 equity in the proposed joint venture. The company will jointly set up a power plant for producing 500 MW of renewable power stations. The proposed plants to be developed include - Sirajganj 100MW grid connected photovoltaic solar power plant, Pabna 60MW grid connected photovoltaic solar power plant, Payra 50MW wind power plant and other projects to generate 290MW.

Prime Minister's adviser on energy issues, Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, was the chief guest at the signing ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Tawfiq-e-Elahi welcomed the partnership between Dhaka and Beijing for development of renewable energy. He urged both the companies to use the country's land properly while implementing the plant projects. He also said that to set up solar power stations, it requires much land. For that reason we are also to think how pisciculture, cattle farming and crop cultivation can be done simultaneously at the same venue. If it can be done, renewable energy will be expanded. Senior Secretary of Power Division, Ahmad Kaikaus, and Bangladesh Power Development Board Chairman Khaled Mahmood also spoke on the occasion.
