No rooftop parties, public gatherings on 31st night: DMP

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has come with instruction that they will not allow any public gathering near roads, flyovers, open spaces or even rooftops on the night of December 31 in order to heighten security centring the New Year celebrations, reports BSS.

As part of government security measures, the DMP on Monday issued a number of instructions as well as traffic diversions for December 31 in the city. Addressing a press briefing, DMP Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said no fireworks or parties will be allowed under the open sky on December 31 night on the occasion of the New Year 2020 celebration. “The DMP has taken stringent security measures in the city aimed at avoiding untoward situation on the eve of the New Year 2020 and stern action will be taken if anyone tries to create anarchy centring the December 31 night,” the DMP Chief said.

Shafiqul Islam said no outsiders and motor vehicles without stickers will be allowed on Dhaka University campus from 6pm tomorrow, adding, “Motor vehicles of teachers, officers and employees with stickers will be allowed to move through Nilkhet and Shahbagh intersection after 6 pm.”

The DMP chief said all bars will remain closed at night from December 30 to January 1 till 6 pm, he said, adding, “Law enforcement agencies have taken stringent security measures for peaceful celebration of New Year.” He added that none will be allowed to stay in the Hatirjheel area after 8pm on December 31.

Visitors or residents bound for Gulshan and Banani areas can use Kakoli and Amtoli intersections; while after a specific time, they will need to show their identification while passing through those intersections, Shafiqul Islam said. Besides, the DMP asked people, who are not residents of Gulshan, Banani, Baridhara and Dhaka University areas, to avoid visiting the areas. The DMP Commissioner urged all residents of Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara areas to return to their respective areas by 8 pm on December 31.
