A seven-day old baby was left abandoned allegedly by her mother at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) in Barishal on Monday. The authorities were trying to send the child to a child care home, sources said.
Hospital sources said that a woman named Mansura, gave birth to a baby girl at the hospital on May 21. The baby was kept at the neonatal care unit of the hospital as she was sick while the mother was in a different ward.
Unit in-charge Mahfuza Begum said that the hospital staff did not find the mother on Monday after looking for her.
Mansura mentioned Mirganj in Babuganj upazila as her address and did not mention her husband’s name in the hospital record, said Mahfuza Begum. She added that her address was found to be wrong.
District Social Welfare Dilruba Akhter said they found no one in the mentioned address and calling the phone number provided by the woman during her admission.
They were trying to send the child to a child care home – Chhotomoni Nibas -- through authorities concerned, she said.
